One day, a little mouse suddenly moved into my garden, and all the plants I grew became its menu of the day.
Every night, it would sneak out under the cover of darkness and eat every tender new shoot growing on my plants. Each morning, when I went out to check on my garden, I would find that all the new shoots were gone.
A delphinium I cared a lot had just begun to grow some green leaves when it caught the mouse’s attention. It started eating it at a rate of three centimetres a day… I still remember sitting on the sofa that morning, sobbing my heart out…
So I tried every possible way to get rid of it.
While I was brainstorming with everyone about how to get rid of it, my brother in law head it and told me, “Hey Carol I think that little mouse is a protected animal.”
After looking it up online, I discovered that there is a little mouse called the Pookila, or New Holland Mouse, an endangered species found in the nearby Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary. Google said that it loves coming out at night to eat seeds, fruit, leaves, and flowers… Ah! That explains everything!
Although I couldn’t be sure whether the little mouse in my garden was actually a protected species, but what else could I do? Fine… you can stay then!
And so, my garden became its home. Late at night, I can still often spot it hopping out and nibbling on my leaves…
But after getting to know it, I began to realise that this garden was never mine alone. My garden is home to butterflies, caterpillars, ladybugs, bees, earthworms, and of course huge spiders! Perhaps I am not simply growing flowers and plants, I am also creating a home where tiny animals and insects can live peacefully.
It turns out that, my little garden has been their perfect home all along.
Thinking of it, this became the theme of this year’s schedule book:
